Why Does It Hurt Somewhere Else? Understanding Referred Pain in the Body
I know this pattern well from my own body. When pain shows up in my gut, it isn’t long before an intense pain flares in my lower back — and the back pain is so loud, it can completely take over, eclipsing the gut entirely. It’s almost comical, except it isn’t. Breathing into each one separately is telling they feel like two entirely different pains, even though they’re coming from the very same source. The inflammation that starts in the gut doesn’t stay there — it travels, finding the joints that are already vulnerable, and suddenly what started as one thing feels like a three-ring circus in the body. But when I turn my attention back to the gut — the actual place it began — the back pain slowly, reliably, begins to shift. This happens more often than people expect, and understanding it changes how you think about chasing pain to its source.
There’s a deeper layer here too — the way inflammation, the nervous system, and old patterns of holding all intertwine with pain like this. That’s a story for another post.
What referred pain is
Referred pain is pain felt in a location different from where it originates. It happens because of how the body’s nervous system and connective tissue are structured — nerve pathways share routes, and fascia connects distant areas of the body into one continuous web. A restriction in one place can transmit tension, and sometimes pain, somewhere else entirely.
Common patterns worth knowing
Jaw tension that shows up as headaches or neck pain
Hip restriction that presents as knee or lower back discomfort
Shoulder and neck tightness that radiates into the arm or hand
Digestive tension that can be felt as tightness through the mid-back
Why chasing the pain doesn’t always solve it
This is one of the most important things I’ve learned in decades of hands-on work: treating only where it hurts often brings temporary relief at best. If the actual restriction lives elsewhere, the pain simply returns once the immediate symptom eases. Lasting change usually requires looking beyond the site of the complaint.
Why the body works this way
The body is not a collection of separate parts — it’s a single, interconnected system. Fascia wraps every muscle, organ, and nerve in a continuous web, and the nervous system runs its wiring throughout, often sharing pathways between areas that seem entirely unrelated. Referred pain is, in a strange way, proof of just how connected we really are.
What this means for how you seek relief
If pain keeps returning despite treating the obvious spot, it may be worth looking at the whole pattern rather than the single symptom. Skilled bodywork often involves following the thread — tracing tension back to where it truly begins, rather than only addressing where it’s loudest.
Your body is always telling the truth. Sometimes it just takes a practiced hand to understand which part of the story it’s telling. But no one hand does it alone — real healing tends to take a village, a team of support around you, each one holding a different piece of the puzzle.
